The last-mile problem didn't get cheaper
At my last job we had two engineers living three blocks apart in the same neighborhood. One had symmetric gigabit fiber from a municipal ISP. The other was stuck on cable with 12 Mbps upstream. Same zipcode, same cost of living, completely different internet. That gap shouldn't exist in 2024.
The honest answer is regulatory capture plus geography made it economically rational for incumbents to do nothing. Cable companies and telcos own the last mile already—laying fiber means cannibalizing their own installed base. In most of Europe and Japan the utilities were already public or got regulated early enough that fiber deployment looked like a cost of business, not a competitive threat. Here, we gave Verizon and Comcast a 25-year head start to own the local infrastructure, and then acted surprised when they optimized for quarterly earnings instead of coverage.
Starlink and municipal fiber are starting to break the stalemate, but it's happening backwards. Competition only arrives once the incumbent's monopoly rent gets too obvious to ignore. The boring infrastructure was never going to be solved by market forces alone. We'd need to actually treat last-mile connectivity like the utility it is—which means either aggressive regulation (politically dead) or letting municipalities build it out themselves (which Comcast actively lobbies against). The reason Tokyo and Stockholm got this right is they didn't wait for the market to solve it. They decided the problem wasn't optional.
